Choosing photos and the weird effects of Negative

Mon Jun 9, 2008, 3:21 AM
I am still feeling hell weird after yesterday's Negative gig. I spent some 4 hours in the direct sun and am pretty sure now that I got some sort of sunstroke. I just noticed that I typed 'Cothie' instead of "Coffee' in the blog... and miss the mouth when I am trying to drink it.

This is almost scary with Ngt, somehow from the start every time I have to deal with those guys on any level, be it an interview or a live gig or seeing them in a bar I end up sick or half-crippled the very same day. Has happened 7 times already. I am now sort of scared to go to Myotatuulirock.

Also I am getting more and more convinced that I am not posting and submitting to media my best photos. Somehow the ones I personally like hardly get any attention on DA or elsewhere, while the mediocre and crappy ones seem to have an appeal. Weird. Is it the same for any of you guys and how do you choose the photos you post?

I just look at all my photos and choose the one I like best :P

That didn't help, did it.

Haha, not much. I also try to pick the ones where the guys don't have a weird face expression... and get told that I am not using the most emotional shots I've got. And that I pay too much attention to how technically good a pic is. But that is explainable at least...

I pick the ones I think are best and often get to hear like 'Any other pic from this folder is better than the one you chose'. At this point I started posting the ones my husband picks out, and they seem to be pretty popular. Unlike the ones I pick myself.
Yeah, pretty frustrating, isn't it. And now it's got crucial for me since I took on some comissions and I'd really want those people to like the pics I give them. I did a promo for one band lately, picked 2 best shots which they heavily trashed... but liked ALL the rest of the shots from the whole session which I thought aren't even usable!
I try to choose photos that are both interesting and technicaly well done. Unfortunately there are not loads of them.
And I should agree, those pics I really like myself don't get enough attention, but since I'm not a commercial photographer I don't care that much=)

Yes, same here. Somehow when I have to make a choice I always go for technically better ones.

I am not a commercial photographer either, but I do care. It's overall important to be able to see which photo the people will like most. That's what ADs do in magazines, and it's as an important position as that of the editor.
Oh, and forgot to say, there's even more to it. The sort of pictures you like somehow determine the sort of photos you'll try to make in the future.
I just choose those pictures that makes the most sense. But I love all of your pictures, even those with people that I've never seen before and never heard of.
Oops, maybe the band is cursed? :O

Well, anyway, I usually start by eliminating any that have unsightly blur and/or sketchy colours and facial expressions and then pick from what's left over. I look for variation when uploading to deviantArt, since nothing says boring like a gallery where all the shots are the same - same pose, same angle etc. etc.
But yeah, I guess subjectivity is something that will always enter into it. Lots of my pics that I like, everyone else doesn't, and vice versa.
Art is a strange beast...
